September is NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH! In conjunction with Amateur
Radio Public Awareness Day: Emergency Power Operating Event is coming up
September 17th. This is not intended as a contest by the ARRL, but
merely an opportunity to test your emergency power sources and to raise
public awareness of the role amateur radio plays in disaster
communications.
What qualifies as emergency power of this event? Any type of solar,
wind or manpowered generator sources such as a bicycle generator,
storage batteries to include HT and other radio battery packs, fuel
powered emergency generators, you name it. If it would be used to
generate power in the absence of AC commercial power, then it qualifies.
Operations can be from home or in the field. The event begins at 9 AM
Eastern time that Saturday morning and runs for 15 hours. Activity can
be on any band(s). Exchange can be casual, though you might want to
include a signal report, location and type of emergency power used.
W1AW will be operating on their 60 kW generator during the event and
QSLs can be obtained by sending the QSL card from your emergency
powered station and an SASE.
