With so many offers of help and advice I wont be able to respond to
everyone so please accept my thanks as a group.

The consensus from most everyone was to just run the 12VAC lights on 12VDC
and see if they blow up. I have some old ones I can try this on. :)
....or....
replace the bulb with a 12VDC LED bulb

Also, running a DC-AC inverter to a voltage stepdown device would simply
waste too much power to make it worth running off solar. There are better
solutions.

While trying to figure out how to make my request ham related I did have
the idea of turning the garden lights on everytime I transmitted but I
figured my wife wouldnt approve, let alone my neighbors :)
