[KYHAM] Changes in email links on the KYHAM web site...

G'Evening all!
In an effort to help protect email address links on the KYHAM site from
email spider bots, I have changed all email links on the KYHAM site to a
very simple javascript function. As you may know, these spiders crawl
through the web and look for email addresses on web pages, and "harvest"
them. This javascript function breaks up the address to the point that it
doesn't appear to be an email address and the spider doesn't get the address.
One side affect of this change was a small change in layout of the
site. Instead of having the person's name highlighted as a link, there is
a additional link in the listings. It simply says Email after the person's
name and callsign. I could have left the person's name highlighted, but to
do so, I would have to replace their name with the script which is an icon
in my layout program. That makes it hard to find an entry I need to
update. <grin>
If you are interested in using this javascript on your local ham site
drop me an email off the list, and I'll send it to you. It's very simple.
This is not a perfect solution, but I don't think there is a way to
totally secure an email address on a web site without a back-end database
and image generating facility like on www.qrz.com. It has one downfall in
that you can't click on a person's name and email them. You have to look
at the image and manually type in the address. There is a lot of
resistance to that type of facility, so we'll just have to take this route.
It will take a little extra work, but I would rather protect the email
addresses of those listed on the web site in trade for the privilege of
providing contact information to those who are seeking amateur radio
organizations in Kentucky.

Take care! 73,
Pat
