COMMENTS:

Another busy month in the Bluegrass! Membership jumped markedly
this month in several areas of the state.

NEWS FROM AREAS:

District 1:
Amateurs assisted in weather siren testing in McCracken Co. Area
1 amateurs took part in refresher training in storm spotting.

District 3:
Daviess Co. EC KG4EMO met with the Green River District Health
Dept. after receiving a request for assistance. They have funding
in place for a commercial UHF repeater and will setup a radio
room and EOC on the ground floor in its offices at 1501
Breckenridge Street in Owensboro. Frank
Hijuelos, Preparedness Planner and Angela Woosley, RN, BSN,
Preparedness Planner, expressed a desire to install an Amateur
Radio VHF/UHF station alongside its commercial outfit. We are
currently working toward assisting the GRDHD in acquiring the
gear. GRDHD officials also are willing to allow use of the
facility for club meetings as well as access to the building and
equipment for use during the weekly District 3 ARES net. (2.5 man
hours)

KG4EMO, K4SAC, and W4RCX met with the Daviess County assistant
EMA Director on April 29 regarding the remodeling of the EOC to
include a room and equipment for ARES use during a disaster or
other communications emergency.

District 5:
At the Area 5 KyEM Quarterly Meeting on April 7, KA4MAP reviewed
the role amateur radioo played in the March 21-24 Western Ky
Earthquake exercise with the KyEM Area Manager and the ten county
EMA Directors, Lincoln Trail Area Health Dept, Ft.Knox and other
officials in attendance. Many counties are adding amateur radio
gear to their EOC's.

First spotter activiation of the year for the Wide Area Repeaters
Net (WARN) as storms rolled through on the 30th of April.

District 7:

Emergency Team. http://www.ky7et.org/

30 members of KY7ET qualified as Damage Assessment personnel on
April 24th.

Amateur Radio is certain to be involved in the CERT team for
Boone County. Training is coming up in May.

District 8:
Rowan County EC John Hedrick, KC4URC is working to revive
interest in the ARES program there. Anyone in Rowan County or
nearby should get in touch with him. We need more involvemennt
in all of Area 8!

District 9:
Martin County has a new EC, Woodrow Nichols, KG4RUV who is hoping
to stir interest in ARES in his area also.

Amateurs in Area 9 are at work to strengthen their ARES program
as a whole. Any Area 9 amateurs not involved already need to
contact your local folks and see what you are missing.

District 13:
Woodforf County EC KC4WZO comments: On April 17th five ARES
members assisted the Bluegrass Community Hospital and Falling
Springs Center with the inaugural "Heart and Sole"
Triathlon/Duathlon. We manned critical turns and railroad
crossings on the 15 mile bicycle course to provide assistance and
emergency communications in case of problems on the course.
Luckily the bicycle race went smoothly and we had no problems.

30 area hams worked hard at the ROLEX in Lexington, Ky on April
24-25. Rolex is the only 4 star equestrian event in the US, and
amateur radio operators serve on the two weekend days of the
event to provide the manpower and communication for disabled and
spectator shuttles. Shuttles in the 1000+ acre park devoted to
the horse consist of golf carts, and vans int he parking lots. A
total of 652.5 man hours went into the operations during this event.

Quite a month!
