As a long time weather spotter, I have done a decent amount of reading on
weather phenomena. While looking at the Louisville NWS site this evening
for a summary of last night's storm reports and ran across a new
term. "Derecho" was a new one on me and I thought I would share it. I
will have to say that this is the first time I recall encountering such a
period of sustained winds.

Complete information is available at:
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofacts but the definition of
the term is "A derecho (pronounced similar to "day-RAY-cho" in English ) is
a widespread and long lived windstorm that is associated with a band of
rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms." The information contained in the
linked page is very interesting and worth a read if you are an amateur
radio spotter.

Storm reports received from the Louisville NWS is listed at
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/damage_surveys/.

Take care all, 73,
Pat, KD4PWL
