I don't believe we need more operators to keep the
bands or to keep the hobby alive.  I believe we need
better operators and more people who have a real
interest in knowing how a radio works.  I use CW
because I enjoy it.  I would also like to learn to use
PSK 31 and RTTY and Moon bounce and Satellites and
more.  
Removing the CW requirment is degrading to the hobby
even if it is an outmoded antiquated mode of 
operation.  The only reason I hear for eliminating it
is that people don't want to do it.  Next, I suppose I
won't need to learn basic electronics to get a ticket
since we don't need to know it because we use
appliance equipment.  Making it easier to get into the
hobby will only kill it.  It will kill it slowly. 
People will still join the hobby but it will change.  

  I don't think it needs to be relegated to Extra.  If
it is going to not be required for HF operation then
it should be a separate endorsment so that if someone
makes gets a ticket and they desire to use CW then
they can.
