Shepherdsville, KY School Ham Club Makes Front Page

In February 2004, the St. Aloysius School's amateur radio club made the
front page of "The Record," a newspaper of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of
Louisville, reaching 68,000 Catholic households. The club was organized by
Buddy Sohl, KC4WQ, through the Bullitt Amateur Radio Society. Teacher Hester
Reinacker sponsors the club for St. Aloysius in Shepherdsville, KY. Amateur
operators Ken Buley, KE4AWY and Ken Weikel, KF4BAR also assist in club
activities.
Consisting of 15 students, the club provides an opportunity for children to
learn about amateur radio. It is part of "The Big Project," ARRL's
nationwide program helping school-aged children to learn about
communications. From February 16-20, the students operated on 15, 20 and 40
meters for two and a half hours after school and made 148 contacts from
Venezuela to Nova Scotia and the both coasts of the U.S.

Sohl says that the students are having a pretty good time. Through "The Big
Project," the League has provided about $2800 in equipment including a Yaesu
847, power supply, tuner and antennas for 2 meters through 20 meters.

Since joining the club, three students raised their science grades from a C
to a B. According to Sohl, it's just one of the ways the success of the
program can be judged.

On December 29, 2003, the Bullitt Amateur Radio Society received an email
stating the B.A.R.S. sponsorship of St. Aloysius was an ARRL Big Project
School. A note was also received from the Kentucky and Great Lakes Section
Managers congratulating B.A.R.S. on doing something no other club in this
area has done - sponsoring a school that has become a Big Project School.

article.
