Dave, thank you for your "fluorescent" comments...
The point I was making about the relative cost of a
portable or mobile radio as compared to that of a
repeater was to show the return on investment that a
user gets. It is just like buying a portable TV set to
watch a "free" off air station that costs many
thousands of dollars a day to operate. $150 (or less)
to access infrastructure that costs many times that
is, in my opinion, reasonable.
On that note, I have a repeater near Leitchfield on
444.900, the tone at present is 179.9Hz. I will send a
free tone board to the first person who has a genuine
need for it in order to access my repeater.
Public Safety radio and amateur radio don't differ
all that much where CTCSS is concerned. It is a safe
bet that most hams know the required CTCSS tones for
areas they frequent, and further that most of the
commonly used frequencies are in a "memory channel"
either in the radio or in the operator's noggin. Of
course, when they operate in a new area, a bit of
research is in order to facilitate such operation.
As a communications supervisor for a well known state
agency, I have often found myself in the same
situation when responding to assist local entities.
Every police officer or deputy sheriff knows "his
frequency", but few know the CTCSS or can supply the
repeater input frequency. Determining either one is
easy enough for me or my techs with sometimes
rudimentary equipment. Given the premise you make for
the superior technical skills of amateurs, as compared
to my technicians, CTCSS should be child's play. ;)
I am in favor of a region-wide 2 meter frequency for
itinerant or "testing" use, if a suitable frequency
can be located. SERA has already done so for 440MHz
with 440.750 and 440.800 designated as itinerant
frequencies. I have a portable repeater on 440.750 for
this use.
I will even send you a free tone board for that old
radio if you like............
