[KYHAM] Spam Revisited

I guess I set off a tempest in a teapot by defending the ARRL E-Mail
forwarding service and stating that it was not in and of it self a source of
Spam. This was in reference to a KY Section ARRL appointee citing the ARRL
forwarding service as a source of unwanted e-mail and requesting widest
dissemination of his remarks. Frankly, I have a number of ham friends in
Kentucky who are unlikely to ever join the ARRL. These people are good
amateurs who excel in following the rules and are invaluable sources of
technical advice and information. These are personal choices, which are to
be respected. Some have a bad taste from the days when the radiotelephone
nets within the Commonwealth were filled with catcalls and open
disrespectthe ultimate in lidsmanship! Peer pressure and good leadership
has rectified that problem.

I know that I am far from a perfect example of a flawless ARS operator. I
do believe that my Life ARRL membership has been a wonderful bargain and has
repaid the cost many times over. No other organization speaks for our ARS
and the ARRL has historically made the ARS, as we know it possible.

I do thank Chuck Milam, KF9FR, for citing the technical resources that mass
e-mailers use to glean addresses. It appears that Spam will remain a way of
life so long as the sender has no cost attached to sending any number of
e-mail messages.

Pat Spencer KD4PWL does a fine job of keeping this forum and we thank
QTH.net for providing the service. The lessons in emergency preparedness
from the SEC are very valuable. This old goat really enjoys reading all of
the messages.

Thanks Pat,
