Simplex and Repeaters

I agree to some extent with the idea that 146.52 should be used as a calling
frequency as the band plan calls for. But I see no harm in local hams
ragchewing on this frequency on lower power settings. What good would it do
to call this the national calling freq if nobody was on it to answer a call?
I've never heard anybody refuse to give up a frequency on VHF when asked to
do so by somebody needing to use it. KY4SP brought up another good point
about repeaters. There are many repeaters out there that are not being
used. This is a subject near and dear to my heart, because for the last 10
years I've tried unsuccessfully to get VHF coordination for our county.
There are many repeaters out there that are coordinated but are either not
on the air or not being utilized. We have a county down here that has some
of the hilltop problems that K4LID described. A repeater would be great to
improve our ability to communicate and maybe to even bolster interest in ham
radio. I don't understand why some of the repeater owners that have
inactive or off the air repeaters, won't relinquish their coordination so
that others can fill a real need. I especially don't understand this in
counties that already have multiple VHF and UHF repeaters. So for now,
going simplex is the way to operate. By the way, come visit our simplex net
on Fridays at 8:30pm on 146.46.

Here in the hills, Simplex is worthless for any distant communications.
It is only good from Hilltop to Hill top and that is all. If it were
not for repeaters, Vhf communications would be non-existent. in hilly
and mountainous terrain.

Tom's comments on simplex and terrain
encouraged me to add that around Mammoth
Cave where we use 146.940/R Glasgow we
also use 146.940 simplex for emergencies when
our repeater is down. We know immediately
then when it comes back and we then duplex
so as to include all the normal stations.
Local ragchews are usually on 146.52 or 146.55

I have to agree with Chuck here, 146.520 is a calling
frequency. Call someone, and then move to another
frequency. In the Murray area, everyone has either
locked .52 out of scan, or not even have it
programmed. Why? within about 50 miles or so, there
is a group of hams ragchewing on .52 night and day
with plenty of power. What if someone is traveling
trough our area, and wants (or maybe, needs) to talk
but is unfamiliar with the local repeaters? They would
give a shout on 146.52. But, unfortunatly, no one
will hear him.

Just my .02 cents worth.

I concede that extended QSOs on 146.52 might be a nuisance to those who
would otherwise monitor the frequency, but given the capabilities of even an
in-expensive 2 meter radio produced in the last 15 or 20 years, it is
relatively easy to find a local machine to call on in an emergency or
otherwise. My own 2 meter repeater isn't used twice a day most of the time
anyway. No one around here listens to "52" mainly because simplex VHF range
is not much compared to even a modest repeater. The only thing we use "52"
for around here is talking between vehicles while traveling together.
