Hi Walter,
I note you have a rebuttal Rebuttal to Warren Bruene's (W5OLY ) "On
Measuring Rs", QEX, May/Jun 2002
posted on your web site. Now this old man wonders why anyone should assume
that the output of an amplifier or any such device said to have a 50 output
can be though to represent a 50 ohm source impedance at any frequency or
every frequency for which it is adjusted to operate.

This subject came up at a Detroit Edison Radio Club meeting where my humble
demonstration was provided for entertainment. An Edison two-way technician
said he observed that the Motorola solid-state two-way equipment that they
were using put out a higher measured field strength when the antenna was
adjusted although the Bird wattmeter showed a mismatch. He also noted
better spectral purity when the radio was mismatched.

I said that it is possible that the radio liked the complex load he
presented to it better than a pure 50-ohm load. Further, the mismatch may
have reduced some parametric "pumping" of the output device which may cause
a low frequency oscillation to occur when acting as a two terminal
parametric device vexed with negative resistance and wishing to oscillate at
a low frequency with the LC collector bypassing network. Is it possible
that that was a correct answer although offered only as a supposition?

Do you mind if we use your "Low SWR" can kill you as a subtitle for our
demonstration revival and give you proper credit?

Thank you for the accolade, Dave, it's nice to know that someone understands
the reason for that title--some shake their heads in ignorance. However, it
was fun thinking it up.

I met George Goldstone just once, probably around 60 years ago in Detroit.
If I remember correctly he was a lawyer. My Dad, W8YNG, knew him quite well.
I'm from Michigan originally, engineered and built WCEN in Mt. Pleasant, but
left to go with the RCA Labs in Princeton, NJ in 1949. Retired from RCA in
1980 and moved to DeLand, FL, where I live from Nov to May, and in Mt.
Pleasant May to Nov.
