COMMENTS:
The main preparedness activity for March was the Ky Severe
Storms Awareness Month Drill and EAS activation of March 11,
2003. This annual event is done in cooperation with Ky
Division of Emergency Management, the Emergency Alert System
(EAS) and National Weather Service Offices across Ky.
Probably due to the massive efforts in real response during
the February ice storms only weeks beforehand, participation
was way down from all past years.
The Kentucky Emergency Net activated on 7.228 MHz. and ran
for 45 minutes. EOC's and EM Stations on the air were:
Madison County EOC/KG4AEU, Harrison County EOC/AG4EX and
Meade County EMA/KA4MAP. Other amateurs participating were;
W8FBX, N4RJA, KY4USA, KG4FJR, K4ULW, WD8JAW, AG4XM, N4VDG,
K4LID, WB4API, KC4IVG, K4AVX, KO4OL, K4WFT, WA4UMD, and from
Indiana, AA9SE, KC9ALQ and KB0LIL.
Reports from local VHF/UHF nets were received from the Wide
Area Repeaters Net (WARN) covering parts of areas 3, 5 and
6, The Bullitt County ARES/RACES/SkyWarn Net whose NCS was
the Louisville NWS station, KF4EKR, Shelby County, Lincoln
County, Madison County, District 7 and the Cincinnati area.
A total of 89 amateurs in Ky and southern Indiana/Ohio took
part in SSAM Drill 2003. Thanks go out to those who took
time out at 10:07 AM from their work day to participate.
District 1 reports; McCracken County is still having
amateurs active in local warning siren tests. Marshall
County is increasing their efforts and had a meeting on
March 18th.
Taylor County EC, KG4CNZ reports that a local MOU was signed
with their hospital in Taylor County of Area 5. Taylor
County hospital has ordered equipment to add a dedicated
amateur radio station to their disaster resources and Taylor
County is looking to find funds to add amateur radio to
their EOC. Green County hospital in Area 5 is also looking
to amateur radio in disasters reports EC Doug Tavender.
ARES was also represented by KA4DRZ and WD4IRW at a meeting
on Bioterrorism on 21 March at Fleming County hospital of
Area 8.
