COMMENTS:

May of 2002 was a another active one for Ky amateurs!

1) Storms repeatedly rolled over the Commonwealth through
the month with high
winds, heavy rains, hail and possible tornadoes. This
brought on spotter activations around the state. May 1st saw
a hail storm of record in Area 5 counties as the cell had
hail as large as softballs, baseballs and hen eggs in most
counties. Several others had flooding and hail damage from
other storms during the month.

2) Amateur Radio again played a role in Area 13 events at
2002 Walk-Diabetes. This national walk-a-thons for the
American Diabetes Association is held annually to raise
money for research/treatment/cure of diabetes. Ten amateurs
supplied communications around the 2.6 mile track at
Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, KY. Since many of the
walkers were diabetic, there was a moderate risk of medical
emergency. One amateur was positioned, and acted as the
driver/partner with the paramedic from the Lexington Fire
Dept during the event. They also worked in helping the
event coordinators with communications to help the event run
a little smoother. This served to help them know where the
400-500 walkers were, and schedule water/snack information
that is
important to a diabetes event.

This was the first year the coordinator had coordinated the
event, and the
experience the group has had at other events such as the
Rolex last month, actually helped her through her first
year. This was the first year the hams have been affiliated
with this event. The local ADA chapter sought them out
after receiving recommendations from the Louisville ADA.
Many thanks to the hams in Louisville that had the
recommendation forwarded. On a side note, 5 of the ten
operators working the event are diabetic, so it had a
special meaning for them to participate.

I'd personally like to say, "Thanks" for your hard work to
all who provided support communications anywhere in Ky this
month!
