Hi, Ron!
This biggest problem here stems not from the local store, but
corporate headquarters. Yes, there is a VERY small blurb in the
catalog about requiring an FCC license, but nothing posted in the
stores for the Amateur equipment OR the "business band" equipment.
This could/should be addressed at the corporate level, as the level
of competence at the local store varies widely. At one time, the
store at Southland in Lexington was run by a scanner enthusiast who
loved Hams. He had everything they carried that we needed on a
regular basis, knew what it was and what we used it for.
Unfortunately for us, he moved on to the store in Paris and we now
have folks there who don't know BNC from VCR and don't care as long
as it sells. Needless to say, their stock of parts reflects that
attitude.
The point is this: a lot of letters/emails to Radio Shack
headquarters from Hams who have Radio Shack accounts will probably do
more good than talking to the local store. By the way, in this area,
I see a LOT of HTX-202 radios hanging from the belts of Hams at
public service events. Most of us started with one because it was
readily available and hung onto it as a backup because it works and
is too plentiful to be worth trying to sell.
