Steve Ewald and Mary Lau Named to Head Two New Teams in the ARRL Field &
Educational Services Department
Steve Ewald, WV1X, and Mary Lau, N1VH, have been named to head two new
teams in the ARRL Field & Educational Services Department (F&ES). F&ES
Manager Rosalie White, K1STO, announced the changes February 8. The new
teams were created to permit the F&ES staff who have common goals to more
easily share expertise, ideas, and resources.
Field Organization/Public Service Team
Steve Ewald, WV1X, will head the Field Organization/Public Service Team,
which supports field volunteers who further ARRL objectives at the local
and state level. Ewald becomes the main contact person at ARRL HQ for
Section Managers and continues as the League's expert on emergency
communications, public service and the Field Organization. White stressed
that Amateur Radio public service is one of the most important aspects of
Amateur Radio and one of the main reasons why we enjoy the many
frequencies we've been allocated. Ewald said his team, which includes
Leona Adams and Linda Mullally, KB1HSV, will give top attention to
supporting field volunteers.
Ewald, 42, was first licensed in 1972 as WN4CMS, and then WA4CMS, in his
native Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1981
with a BS in Communications. He began his career at ARRL HQ in 1982 in the
Club & Training Department. Not long after Field Services Department was
formed in 1984, he worked with ARRL Section Leaders, Field appointees and
the National Traffic System volunteers. He currently edits Section News
and QST's Public Service column, and is a frequent contributor to other
ARRL publications dealing with public service and the Field Organization.
Ewald says, "I'm quite interested in the many aspects of Amateur Radio
public service and emergency communications and the planning and training
behind it all. I especially enjoyed helping to rejuvenate the Newington
ARES team and working with the Connecticut ARRL Field Organization
leaders." Other activities outside ham radio that Steve enjoys are hiking
in the mountains, golfing, and downhill skiing.
Field & Educational Support Team
Mary Lau, N1VH, will head the ARRL Field & Educational Support Team, which
works with field volunteers active in education and recruiting of new
hams, as well as providing support for ARRL-affiliated clubs and
ARRL-sanctioned conventions and hamfests. F&ES also sponsors annual events
such as Jamboree on the Air (Scouts), GOTA, School Club Roundup, Kids Day,
and annual educator and technical awards. Lau's team includes Jean
Wolfgang, WB3IOS, Gail Iannone, and Margie Bourgoin, KB1DCO.
Rosalie White stressed that Amateur Radio education in arenas other than
schools will continue to be a major issue, equal in importance to support
of clubs, and hamfests and conventions. "We want to hit many different
venues to recruit new hams and educate licensees; these are some of the
most important aspects for the growth of Amateur Radio," she said. "We
have a good team in place in the department that values customer service
and is capable of supporting the needs of volunteers and their
activities," Lau said.
Lau began her ARRL HQ career in 1986 in the Club Services Department and
as Secretary of the ARRL Foundation (a position she holds to this day).
She held administrative support positions in several ARRL HQ departments
before joining the Educational Activities Department in 1994. In 1999, she
became Project Supervisor for F&ES and has been involved in many aspects
of the department's operation.
Lau, 48, was first licensed as in 1985. College efforts have focused on
accounting, film studies, foreign cultures, and Hebraics. When not
involved in Amateur Radio activities, Lau enjoys reading, gardening,
cinema, musical theatre, hiking, photography, hybrid biking, and archery.
