For the past 51 weeks, I have tried to bring you material
that would either inform you or stir creative thinking on
your part. No matter what I may do as the Section Emergency
Coordinator for our Ky ARES program, YOU are what makes (or
breaks!) the way it works in a time of need. The great
majority of all KEN material is available at the resource
library page found at http://www.qsl.net/kd4pwl/library.html
. It is downlaodable in pdf format and is available for use
on any net anywhere, club newsletters or even in classroom
settings for local groups. Some of the material is borrowed
from other sources and is marked as such. Most of this is
also free to be used anywhere so long as the original,
authoring source receives credit for the material.
In 2002 we looked at such diverse topics as terrorism, NTS
and passing radiograms, designing your own Mobile Command
Post, and a number of issues regarding gathering info and/or
making ARES responses. Our Kentucky Emergency Response
Reference (KERR), our general guidance document is also
available in downloadable pdf at the above URL. It will
soon be getting another update in early 2003 as it was last
revised in January of 2002. The KERR, as with any planning
document, is a constantly changing animal.
I invite feedback from all of you at any time on Ky ARES
issues. If you have thoughts to offer, they can be made
either on the air or by e-mail. I am currently looking for
ideas on training material for 2003 that you'd find useful.
On this week's KEN, (12/30/02, 8 PM eastern time on 3.888
MHz.) I welcome any commentary or items you'd like to
discuss during the course of the net. By next week's KEN on
January 6, 2003, I hope to have received all the reports of
activity from December and can have the numbers for this
past year for your inspection.
As Pat, KD4PWL has pointed out, KYHAM listserv has had
around 900 messages posted to it this year. The Ky Amateur
Radio Web http://www.qsl.net/kd4pwl/index.html has also been
busy. The Links page, News, County Resources, Resource
Library and Photos pages all have had fairly heavy use. Pat
has provided us all with a great resource and a wealth of
information at the click of a mouse and a tap to a few
keys.
I have no doubt that the coming year will present any new
challenges to the amateur fraternity at large and Ky
amateurs who stay in touch with the KyHAM List, the above
site and the Ky ARRL page
http://www.arrl.org/sections/?sect=KY will be best able to
know the facts and stay up to date on any developing
situations that occur. Spread the word!
If anyone received a neat new rig, antenna or mode for
Christmas this year don't keep it to yourself. Let us all
know about it. Comments on likes and dislikes are always of
interest to most amateurs as they may be considering
purchasing the same thing for their station. I also
constantly have hams ask me about various rigs or
accessories they are considering investing in to see if I
have either used or know of someone who has a certain piece
of gear. Such info is helpful as we all know when getting
ready to buy new gear.
Hams are communicators and here in Ky, we have several ways
of doing so both on and OFF the airwaves. 73
