We are pleased to announce an upcoming public training opportunity. The
U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in conjunction with Elkhart County Emergency
Management and the National Weather Service will host a River Ice Spotter
training program on Saturday October 29, 2005. The training will be held at
the Elkhart Chapter of the American Red Cross located at; 721 Riverview
Avenue, Elkhart. The training will run from 8:30 am until noon eastern
standard time. Pre-registration is not required, however additional
information may be obtained by contacting Elkhart Emergency Management at
574-535-6590 or the National Weather Service at: 574-834-1104 or on the
Internet at www.weather.gov/iwx
Participants will have an opportunity to learn various aspects of ice
formation, their causes and concerns it may raise, especially for those that
live and travel near rivers and streams. Participants will also have the
opportunity to sign up and become an "official ice observer", relaying
information directly to the National Weather Service. This information will
be used by the National Weather Service to make forecasts of potential river
flooding resulting from ice jams. No special qualifications or equipment
are required to participate in the training. The training is open to anyone
who may or may not live near waterways.
