Re-posting from the Alaska VHF and Up group reflector:

Hello group,

Getting the log submitted is always a good end to a fun event. I didn't
score as well as I hoped, but still had fun. (Claimed score of 80.) The
big win for me was using antennas I modeled and built myself. That was
very fulfilling.

I'll probably do a different strategy next time. What has been killing
me is the trip up to BP42 and BP52 (Willow area). It's a long, winding
drive, no locals are on air, and I don't have a high spot to transmit
back to Anchorage. (If there were more operators on 6M SSB it would be
easy to activate those grids, but we're not there yet.)

In the September event I'll probably rove again, but will concentrate on
fewer, more productive grids. I'll likely start out on the Anchorage
hillside in BP51, then drop down to point Woronzof briefly for BP41, and
finishSaturday on Turnagain Arm to pick up BP50. That will keep me in a
"contactable" area for more of the contest time.

I might do a just-for-fun trip to the Kenai on Sunday to see if I can
easily bag BP40 and BO49 during the ending hours of the event. That run
will be more feasible if I'm not burned out from driving to Willow and
back on Saturday. Will see.

Don't forget, the CQ WW VHF Contest is coming up next month: July 20-21.
I am tentatively planning to do the same thing I did last year. I'll be
setting up on a mountain peak for a SOTA activation and operating as a
portable station, rather than a rover. More details to come . . .

73,

Brandon
