[KL7AA] Portable Shortwave Radios

Hello Steve,

I would actually recommend against all of those. If you are getting
licensed as a radio OPERATOR, then there are a number of transceivers which
have wide receive capability and will provide both shortwave listening
capability as well as radio transmitting functions. You can save some money
that way.
For example, I have an alinco DJ - G7 handheld radio that I use for
backpacking and camping. It transmits on three VHS bands, and also has a
built-in bar antenna for AM shortwave receiving. Makes for a very portable
way to stay in touch while hiking. 4 HF capability, you could go with a
yaesu - 817 and still be portable. A side benefit of a portable receiver
like this is that you can also use it for tracking noise sources.
If your interests tend more towards base station operating, then take a
look at the base station transceivers you might purchase once licensed. The
vast majority of them will also function as a shortwave receiver - this is
usually denoted by the phrase, wide receive, in the specifications. Need
specific, numerical, receive range will also be called out in the details.
