I wanted to announce to the local ham community that the AARC just
participated in the IDEA Homeschool Fair held at the Egan Center in
Anchorage Thursday and Friday. We had a half table which was free for the
club, and although we only were able to man the booth for a limited time,
were able to attract 15 kids to sign up for an open house at the KL7AA
clubhouse.
We will hold that event on Saturday May 16 at 2pm.
As home schooling becomes increasingly popular, families are looking for
ways to teach their children science and technology. I suspect everyone on
this mailing list sees the obvious connection with amateur radio since we
already have the materials published that would promote those topics. In
addition to science and mathematics, children get great exposure to world
culture, language arts, and hands on skills with varying tools.
We hope this is the first of many years at this home school fair. It is a
great way to get new hams and to promote our hobby.
I encourage you who benefited from having an "Elmer" assist you not only
obtain your ticket but help you through the many fun but sometimes
intimidating trials of getting on the air, to consider volunteering some of
your time to be an Elmer. We will need that if this avenue to new hams is
to become successful.
