QST:
KL7AA was on the air for Field Day this year at the old FCC site (thanks to
Richard KL2AZ who also helped from setup to teardown). While set up day
(Friday) had some localized and intense rain, the club infrastructure was up
to the task and Keith KL7MM and TJ KL7TS had it in fine shape. We were all
set with a very organized operation and met our 1000 commencement on
Saturday.
We drew some interested passers-by, had lots of slowdowns and gawkers, and
hopefully met some of our intent to show the public that Amateur Radio was
alive and well. We had several out of state hams come by including Jeff
KK6GBM who helped us a lot with Friday's set up, and John K3GHH who operated
quite a few hours of CW and helped with tear down on Sunday.
We had excellent operating skills from Kent KL5T and Joseph KL3JY and IT
support from Rich AL4S. There were other visitors in the logbook including
a ham from Poland and our ARRL Section Manager Jim AL7FS along with some
folks who were just interested. While we did have a severe magnetic storm
earlier in the week, we did enjoy stable conditions and had many contacts
from 80 meters to 15.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience in the Field Day coordinator chair,
so much that I will happily announce my anticipation of doing this again
next year. Hope to see you then!
