The club's have recently received several requests for Tech Classes and
contacts for help in Ham Radio.
To that end we want to maintain a list of folks who are willing to
assist a new ham or other ham radio related issues in the area. This
will include answering questions from potential new hams to technical
help on rigs, antennas etc...
An Elmer is one that helps in these situations, educates and or trains
new and old hams on how to properly operate their station to helping
them setup a station. Specific "how do I upgrade" questions should be
directed to the VEC Page at KL7AA.NET.
Usually this help only requires a phone call between the person asking
for help and the Elmer, on occasion as needed it may need hands on
attention. This is strictly between the Elmer and the people asking for
help. The Clubs will provide contacts only, the area Volunteer
Examiners are a good example of Hams helping Hams.
Since putting together a formal class is both logistically a pain and
since getting a room full of students often proves problematic. Until
such classes are available we encourage potential new hams to look for
an Elmer to help them. Further we encourage potential news hams to look
to the online practice exams to get an idea where they need help. Then
when you see where you need help with either the material or the
question itself you can contact an Elmer for help. That's also when you
should think about an ARRL or Gordon West Exam Manual.
Information on the VE Program is on the KL7AA Website
http://www.kl7aa.net/VEC/vecmain.html.
Practice Exams can be found online at QRZ.COM and EHam.COM.
So if you are willing to be a contact to Elmer an area Ham or potential
new ham please let Jim Wiley, KL7CC know via email at KL7CC at ARRL.NET.
Jim will put together an internal list of contacts and as requests come
in we will be able to put the closest Elmer in touch. We will not
publish this list so your information will not be "on the web". Please
provide your name, call sign, a good phone number and what area of South
Central you would like to help with.
As always you can send a note to any of the clubs email addresses and we
will get you to the right person.
Thanks to all for the efforts to keep this hobby growing. We lead by
example, be that example!
Ron, KL7YK
