Ken,

I often wondered the same thing, especially when operating a beacon.

I got into a “discussion” with the PA beacon about adding a stroke W3. It
went about like I expected.  Such a shame, drives the DXers wild when they
work a KL7 only to get a QSL from Florida!!!

50075.0 KL7GLK/3Bay Ridge MD     FM18SW   4 Turnstile  Omni A1    24   0209
50075   NL7XM   Easton PA        FN20IP   3 Dipole     N-S  A1    24   0509

The only ones listed in AK:

50063   NL7Z    Wasilla AK       BP51    50 M2 Loop         A1    24   0609
50065   KL7/KG0VL Circle AK      BP75XW 100 Horiz Loop Omni A1    24   0708

By the frequency, it appears he is in fact hearing a lower 48 AK callsign.
I have been hearing 10 meter beacons in 5'land but 6 is another story.
