Alaska man is first traffic fatality of ’07

by Ford Gunter - THE GARDEN ISLAND

The visitor who died in Monday’s accident on Kuhio Highway was
identified by county officials as Michael Caughran, 51, of Alaska.

The Caughran’s two passengers, wife Jacquelyn Smail, 50, and son Sean
Caughran, 23, both of Alaska, were treated and released from Wilcox
Memorial Hospital Monday.

Earlier reports indicated that the two passengers were both female.

Bus driver Jerry Elwood, 60, of ‘Oma‘o, was also treated and released
from Wilcox.

According to police, at around 4:15 p.m., the northbound sedan attempted
to make a U-turn from the right land of the highway. A Polynesian
Adventures Tour bus, also northbound and trailing on the inside lane,
broadsided the car and pushed it across the highway and onto the shoulder.

The accident, which occurred near Mile Marker 3, blocked traffic in both
directions for several hours Monday evening.

The island’s first traffic fatality of 2007 comes almost a year to the
day after the first of 2006 — a year in which 14 people died on Kaua‘i
roads, including three members of a California family who were struck by
a natural gas truck while attempting a U-turn near Waimea in August.
