Subject: FW: Astronaut training over the Houston 146.64 repeater
tomorrow morning

Tomorrow some astronauts will be training for their upcoming mission in
a simulator at the Johnson Space Center. Part of their training
simulation will be the use of a ham radio station just like one on the
space station to do simulated contacts with hams over the 146.64 MHz
repeater in southeast Houston, Texas. This simulation is scheduled for
8:45 to 9:30 am central time tomorrow morning (Thursday Dec 13th).

If you are within VHF range of the 146.64 repeater feel free to
participate.

If you are farther away, then you might be interested to know that we
are looking into the possibility of linking the 146.64 repeater over
IRLP on channel 9010 in a listen only mode during this event. If you
know someone with an IRLP node then you can ask them to connect to node
9010 for the event. If you don't have access to IRLP then you can try
listening to the streaming audio at this link:

I will try to find out if there is an echolink connection available.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Also feel free to pass this email on to anyone you think might be
interested.

QST,
On Thursday, Dec 13 sometime between 8:30 and 9:30 AM on the W5RRR
repeater (146.64 -), astronaut Mike Fincke - KE5AIT will be conducting
 a
practice session making general contacts via ham radio using a newly
installed radio in the ISS service module mockup facility. If you are
available and in range of the JSC repeater then you are welcome to try
and contact him during the 10-15 minute training period. The intent is
to give crewmembers a feel for the protocols used while making general
contacts and to get a sense of what a pile up may sound like so the
 more
participants the better. Keep in mind that we will also be simulating
LOS at some point. The crewmember will just stop calling or sign off to
begin other training duties.

With good support on this initial trial, we can look forward to more
opportunities to talk with the astronauts in the future. Hope you can
participate and look forward to your help in providing a great practice
session.

Kenneth - N5VHO
