Hi Dan,
Every time I see you pop up in my e-mail, it reminds me how much I miss
home...
Your message smacks of false logic, my friend. I'm no whiz-bang at CW even
though I passed the 20 WPM "back in the day", but every mode has its place.
Sure, 20 feet is great for FRS, but so is raising your voice. Let's look at
a more realistic application...
I vividly recall an SSB QSO on 20 meters (I was stationed in North Dakota,
and the distant end was in BC, Canada) when the conditions dropped out. On
my Heathkit HW-101, I had to repeat several times to "go to CW". He barely
got the message, but we were able to continue on CW for another 20 minutes.
That said, I can barely copy it now, but CW definitely has its place. Good
on the folks that enjoy it and keep it going. My take is that no mode is
better or worse than another...they're just different. One may be more
appropriate, given specific conditions.

I found myself in a very strange situation last night. I was actually
cheering
for Morse code. Then the thought hit me. My grandkids could have delivered
the same message by FRS walkie-talkies 10 times faster than Morse code.
]
Lets see $14 for a pair of FRS walkie-talkies VS a pair of Yaesu FT-817s,
paddles, internal batteries, and after market rubber duckies. I bet those
Morse code guys spent $1400 to send a wireless message 20 feet.
Oops, BD slipped out,
73 & sorry, Dan KL7DR

For those who may have missed the TV show, a friend has made the video
segment of the Cell Phone Vs Morse Code technology clip.available via the
Internet. If the links don't come through the list, check out:

Morse Code vs Text Messaging
Which technology do you think is faster? The following video clips are
from the Tonight Show which aired on Friday evening, May 13th, 2005. It
features a message sending/receiving contest between a cell phone text
messaging team and a team of morse code operators. The morse code team is
composed of Chip Margelli, K7JA and Ken Miller, K6CTW.
There are two video files below, both are identical except one is encoded
for RealPlayer and one for Windows Media Player. The RealPlayer file is
only slightly larger but seems to be quite a bit better video quality for
the incremental size. If you have RealPlayer, choose the first file
(".rm"), otherwise, choose the second file (".wmv").
For the best performance, right click on the link that you want and pick
"Save Target As..." and save it to your local hard drive.

Enjoy!
