[KL7AA] GMRS Help

Hello -- I've been reading your notes as passed via the KL7AIR and 
KL7AA e-mail newsgroups, for better than a year now.

Anyway, I am thinking of taking baby step towards amateur radio, and 
leaning into GMRS as a possibility.

Basically, I like the FRS features, but the limited range is just that 
-- way too limited.  All I need (want) radio access for is to 
communicate with my family from base camp to my secret fishin' hole, or 
hunting, or whatever.

Are there any repeaters in the local area?  Any suggestions on portable 
transceivers, as well as base stations?

Heck, any suggestions on GMRS as a whole?
