[Kenwood] Kenwood Status

Well first of all, there is no more "Kenwood Communications Co". Trio-Kenwood started manufacturing amateur radio and other comm. radios in 1955 but was acquired several years ago  and is now a division of JVC Consumer Electronics Co. JVC makes stereo/audio and television electronics, not amateur equipment.  I assume a decision was made by JVC to continue the Kenwood division for the time being, as long as there was a demand for Kenwood amateur comm. equipment, which they've done so far. Whether or not JVC is making a profit on the Kenwood division is anyone's guess, but if I had to bet, I'd say they're probably losing money, or barely breaking even,  given the limited number of amateurs in the world and the fact that amateurs, as a group, tend to be cheap, keep their radios for years, repairing them when they break, recycling them and selling them to other amateurs, and generally, not generating a large volume of new radio sales for JVC.. I have on insider information whether or not JVC will continue maintaining the Kenwood division. I certainly hope so, but given the move towards SDR 'box' transceivers, that are extremely reliable and can last for years with no, or minimal maintenance, I would not be at all surprised if JVC killed off, or sold the Kenwood division at some point in the future. But to my knowledge, despite these kind of rumors popping up every few years when they fail to launch any new amateur products for 5-10 years, I am not aware that JVC has any  plans to "deep 6"  the Kenwood division.

I don't think that just because this rumor comes along every few years, we should assume it will never be true.
I'm nervous about Kenwood's stake in amateur radio even without hearing rumors.
