Jim - they're most likely 1.2V NiMH rechargeable 'tootsie roll' type batteries. They come with solder tabs for easy pack construction and you will need ten of them to construct a 12V pack. I bought mine on eBay, and they come in various mAH ratings (800, 1100, etc). Have fun soldering them up!
