The CX is a no-pressure contest celebrating the older commercial and Home Brew equipment that was the pride and joy of ham shacks many decades ago. The object is to encourage restoration, operation and enjoyment of this older Classic equipment. You need not operate a Classic rig to participate in the CX. You may use any rig in the contest although new gear is a distinct scoring disadvantage as your multipliers are directly related to the age of the equipment you use! However, you can still work the "great ones" with modern equipment. There are two (2) entry categories per mode: ?Three or fewer receiver-transmitter pairs ?Four or more receiver-transmitter pairs. It is doing AFSK on MMTTY ok, but would like to set it up for FSK so I could keep different settings for RTTY vs FT8 and the other digital modes. Has anyone set up their TS590 with MMTTY using FSK? It was pretty easy to do with the Yaesu FT991 I had before, but I can't really find anything on the internet as to how to do it with the Kenwood TS590. Great radio BTW! 73 John W5TD From ken.d.brown at hawaiiantel.net Sun Feb 9 17:32:44 2020 From: ken.d.brown at hawaiiantel.net (ken.d.brown at hawaiiantel.net) Date: Sun, 09 Feb 2020 11:32:44 -1100 Subject: [Kenwood] CW keying envelope at low power settings Message-ID: <21abb1a1c212c03f8d25bf8b5ea9007b@hawaiiantel.net> Hi all, I am curious about the keying envelope on TS-480 and TS-590. I have a couple of TS-440 and they had a weird "soft" keying when operated at lower power levels. I was driving a SGC SG-500 amplifier which requires only 50 watts of drive. When I turned to TS-440 TX PWR down to 50 Watts output the keying got weird. I could make adjustments to the ALC circuitry to get the keying normal at 50 Watts, but then 50 Watts became the maximum the radio would put out. Rather than do that I made a power attenuator to use on the SG-500 input. Now I'm thinking about buying a TS-480 or maybe a TS-590. If I chose the 200 Watt version of the TS-480 would I have a similar problem when turning the TX power down to 50 watts to drive an amplifier? Or does the keying sound the same at any power level? Here are my steps that result in failure... === Using Kenwood MCP-D74 With radio off and disconnected from PC, I open the Device Manager. No Ports devices exist. I connect the TH74A to the PC via a USB cable. I then turn the TH-74A on. A 'Port' device appears in the Device Manager and specifically 'TH-74A (COM4)' now appears in the listing of devices. I open MCP-D74 program. I acknowledge the standard 'First Import from the Radio before doing anything else.' dialog. I notice in the status bar that the program is currently set to COM 3. I choose the Setup/COM Port Setting... dialog. The program already knows that the port should be COM 4 and I press 'Close' to acknowledge that. I select 'Read Data form (sic) the Transceiver'. I press the 'Read' button. Error! It is asking if the radio is connected to COM 4, If the radio is On, and if all settings are standard. === Using TH-D74 Programmer from RT Systems Restart the computer for a fresh go at it. I open the Device Manager and see no Port devices. Radio is Off and not connected. Open TH-D74 Programmer. From the Communications menu, I select 'Get Data From Radio...' Per instructions, I connect the radio via USB. I also turn the radio On. The Port device listing appears in the Device Manager. The device is now listed as TH-D74 (COM3) I press the OK button. The dialog changes to 'Attempting Communications...'. A second dialog appears saying 'Incorrect radio ((null)) connected.' === I have reset the radio to Mfr original settings. I then corrected the time zone. I then repeated the above with no change in results. This is the model that has 500hz and 2.7khz roofing filters as standard, a jack to hook up a second receiver for dual receive, or a SDR for a pan adapter, separate receive antenna jack, built in CW memory keyer, and a built in antenna tuner that is one of the best for current radios. The receiver has a dynamic range above 90db on Sherwood's receiver data table. It does 100 watts on HF and 6m, and both computer control and audio in and out for the digital modes can be done with a single USB cable. Kenwood also has a very good CAT program you can download for free. You will be very pleased with this radio! The radio comes with a power cord, hand mic, and usb cable. I am asking $795 shipped in the US for it. Hand Microphone with round 8 pin plug for Kenwood, Alinco, etc. This hand mic works great on most Kenwood rigs with the round 8 pin connector, such as the TS-440, TM-241, TM-2530, TW-4000, and others, including Alinco and ADI. It says "Electret Condenser Mic" on the back, and "Kenwood" on the front, with no model number. Basically, this mic functions like an MC-43, with a couple more features. It has the mic and PTT switch; it also has up/down switches on the top. There are four "extra" buttons labeled Call, VFO, MR, and PF. What these four buttons do depends on the rig. There is also a "Lock" switch on the back. Regardless if you use the four extra buttons or not, you still have a mic that works like an MC-43. This mic works fine, and looks like new. I am guessing it came with a rig, and was immediately put in the drawer, and never used. Only $30. . . I plan to operate remote from South Dakota from April 2020 thru October 2020. I want to use the most dependable method to operate remote to my host station here in Southeast Louisiana. I "don't want to have to sell the farm" to do so. My idea is to use a TS 2000 front control panel or other compatible panel to operate fixed remote from. Do any of you have knowledge and or experience doing this. Does anyone have a front panel that is compatible with the TS 2000? I know that several remote? Kenwood? panels will work for that purpose. If you have a suitable panel that will serve that purpose that you are willing to dispose of, please let me know.. I will also appreciate the benefit of your knowledge and experience.
