Kenwood TS-430 HF Transceiver: The Kenwood TS-430 is an HF transceiver covering 160 thru 10 meters, including the WARC bands. It produces about 100 watts output, and is powered by 13 V DC at about 20 amps. It is primarily a SSB and CW transceiver, although it does support AM. This one works fine. It hears well, although I didn't hear much on 10 or 15 meters. On the transmit end, it has at least 100 W output on all bands except for 160 meters where it is a tad less. Cosmetically it is very good. With power cord and paper work. Price reduced to only $325. . . Astron RS-20 A, 20 amp Power Supply: The Astron RS-20 A is a very common power supply around most ham shacks. It provides 13 V DC for many ham rigs. I have solved the issue, so am posting a summary in hopes that someone may find it helpful, either now or in the future. Clif Holland on the Kenwood list (www.avvid.com/) suggested I first attempt lubrication between the shaft and bushing. Unfortunately I had no luck with this; in my case the shaft was bound up hard and beyond this treatment. I ended up buying a VFO encoder on a popular auction site with 4 letters ;-) at reasonable cost, which had been removed from a parts radio. The VFO encoder is buried pretty deep into the front panel of the rig, and a fair amount of disassembly was required to get to it, including removal of the 2 control boards (the board which contains the memory battery and the one directly below it). I removed the battery before removing the boards, as Clif warned me of the opportunity for shorting unknown points together when the boards are loose, and there are plenty such opportunities! I did not remove the boards completely from the radio, and only disconnected enough of all the cables to them to get them out of the way sufficiently to replace the VFO encoder, which is beneath the 2nd board. There is a 3rd board beneath the 2nd one, but that one doesn't need to be removed, as it has a cut-out around the VFO encoder. The plastic front panel also needs to be removed in order to get a deep socket wrench around the nut on the VFO encoder bushing. After the boards were safely screwed down again and reconnected to the cables, the memory battery was reinstalled. I lubricated the shaft/bushing on the "new" encoder with 2 small drops of 3-in-1 oil before replacing the VFO knob, which, by the way, requires a 1.5mm Allen wrench for the set screw. A few more things - whenever working inside the radio I was wearing a wrist strap tied to the front panel metal frame, and I had the whole radio on a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil, to avoid damage from ESD. I also used a grounded soldering iron to remove and replace the battery. Finally, Clif advised taking multiple photos during the various stages of disassembly, and I had to refer to one of them to make sure I got a pair cable connectors? back into their proper sockets on the board. After I got it all back together (surprisingly enough!) the rig worked flawlessly. I am grateful to both Clif and my friend Mark KA2QFX for the helpful information and encouragement along the way. 73, -Larry/NE1S On 6/10/18 9:53 AM, Larry Szendrei wrote: > I have a Kenwood TS-440S which I bought brand new in the mid 1980s, > which I have done my best to keep in pristine physical condition. > > This morning I was repeatedly manually scanning up and down the band* > with the VFO knob, and it quite rapidly started to turn harder and > harder. Many thanks for sharing... > 73, > -tom > Hi, Tom, My answers to your questions: 1. I don't know exactly what caused the binding, but I assume the shaft/bushing were dry after all these years, and when I was spinning the knob so much looking for QSOs in the recent June VHF contest it got warm from friction, and galling bound it up tight. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galling for a definition of galling.) I don't know if the original encoder can be repaired or not, but I didn't need to go there because I was able to find a replacement at a reasonable price. I'm saving the old one and maybe I'll look into it someday. Repairing it may well be beyond the capability of mere mortals. 2. The reason I chose 3-in-1 oil is simple: it was the only light oil I already had on hand. Clif recommends Singer Sewing Machine oil; from his experience he thinks it's a better choice. I imagine it would help to lube the surfaces periodically, as long as any excess oil doesn't end up inside the encoder. How often? I don't know, but probably more often than once every 30 years! Glad you enjoyed my summary. I wanted to answer some of the questions which I had before I started and during the replacement, in case others found themselves in the same "bind" (pun intended). 73, -Larry/NE1S From vzwengr at gmail.com Thu Jun 28 22:14:32 2018 From: vzwengr at gmail.com (Eric) Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2018 19:14:32 -0700 Subject: [Kenwood] My first post Message-ID: <60b75c10-85b4-e28b-a66e-f879399cf8fe@gmail.com> I'm Eric, WB6TIX, a recently retired Verizon Wireless RF engineer. I equipped mine with a pair of 250hz filters from the predecessor of the above company, shortly after I bought the 830, many years ago. As someone with 'cloth ears' I needed all the help I could get. I wouldn't disagree with Clif about using the high frequency filter if you're only going to install one. I run Eudora, a very old-fashioned e-mail client, simply because nothing else comes close to meeting my needs. It displays roughly 40 of the most recent messages to this reflector that I have chosen to save because they are of interest. It's worthy of note that 32 of these are from Clif, whose contributions I greatly appreciate.
