[Kenwood] Connecting to first IF (45.05 MHz) in TS-940S - recommendations?

I am having a good time slaving a low-cost RTL-SDR to the second IF output of my TS-940S (currently using sdr-radio console software and an upconverter kit to map 8.83 MHz to 28.83 MHz so that RTL-SDR can receive).
I'd like to connect to the 45.05 MHz first IF rather than the 8.83 MHz second IF, as this would eliminate the need for an upconverter between the TS-940 IF output and the RTL-SDR input.
I have done some searching (there are many topics posted around the web addressing aspects of TS-940S), but I've not seen any postings that clearly describe how/where to attach to the first IF signal path.
Any pointers or recommendations (or cautions that I shouldn't try this)?
Thanks very much,
