A couple of friends have TS-450S rigs which they like a lot.

I was over to one of those yesterday, and we tried to get his TS-450S to auto-tune his 160 
meter antenna on 160 meters, but the auto-tuning function does not work on 160, although it 
works on all other bands.

We then tried to use the Kenwood procedure in the manual to "manually" load the antenna, 
but THAT function would not work either.

Does anyone know whether 1) the TS-450S's automatic antenna coupler will not work on 
160 meters, or 2) is there a problem with this particular TS-450S, or 3) is there a way to get 
it to work?

We find nothing in the manual that suggests that 160 meters is locked out of the tuning 
procedure, nor did I find anything which mentions this on the web either.

Advice? Suggestions?

It won't tune on 160 with the internal tuner. You'll need an external tuner
for that.

Well, I find that interesting since the automatic antenna tuner in my FT-890 DOES work on 
160 meters, and does a good job too.

Oh, well....

I guess my two friends will have to use an external coupler.

TS-940 owners,

 

I have a 940 that has a very slow antenna tuner.

 

According to the Circuit description, the tuner operates in High speed when
the SWR is high and then slows down the motor speed when the SWR becomes
low.

 

My unit appears to be stuck in slow speed. I was wondering if any other
TS-940 owners have run into this problem. 

 

Trouble shooting will be interesting given that it is crammed it such a
tight space.

 

Thanks in advance for any tips you might have.

I have a TS-850SAT and it has been modified to operate out of band.
I used this on Navy-Marine Corps MARS when it was it existed.
I find that it will not tune on 60 meters.  Is there something different
that has to be done to operate on the 5 mhz band?

I have four boards from what I remember to be a TS-520 that I repaired for a friend.  Each is missing the 10 meter (28) coil because I robbed the coils to fix the boards in the fellow's transceiver which had been hacked up, probably by a CB'er.  Anyway, the boards are:

X44-1090-00

The other coils on the boards and the switches look good.

It turns out that I had not modified the TS-850SAT at all.

Well today I did the modification on the TS-850SAT and it works fine on all the bands.
The ATU in the TS-850SAT even tunes the 60 meter band.

Looks like I will have a lot of fun with the TS-850SAT.

You take off the top and bottowm covers and take out the two screws on the side at the top
for the front panel and loosen the two screws on the side at the bottom of the front panel.
Carefully tilt out the front panel and look at the board behind the front panel.  There is a row
of diods in the center of that board.  Clip the lead on diode D11.
Put everything back in reverse of the above.  You must reset the microprocessor before 
this mod will take effect.

i was just on 5403.5 and it works great.  The internal tuner even tunes 60 meters.

Subject: [Kenwood] TS-870S CALIBRATION

Hi all,

      I have a TS-870S that the digital frequency readout is slightly 
off. I pulled the top cover and found the trimmer that you adjust to 
correct this, but I cannot find a screwdriver small enough to fit in 
the trimmer screw. It is a phillips screw. I have a #1, and a #0 
phillips, and also a miniature jeweler's screwdriver set, but none of 
them will fit into the screw head. I also have a bunch of alignment 
tools, but none of them are phillips. I can't really tell if the 
screwdrivers are too big, or if there is some clear coating on the 
screw that keeps the screwdriver from entering the screw head. The 
trimmer is about an inch or so below the chassis, and it is hard to 
see if there is some coating there. Has anybody had any success 
adjusting this trimmer ???  What did you use ???
