It works adequately, but there are two issues with it I would like to fix: 1) there is a very noticeable whine in the audio, both receiving and transmitting. After doing a bit of sleuthing, I believe that this is coming from the frequency synthesizer, since the noise changes characteristics (but not frequency) when operating any of the frequency-control or scanning functions. I suspect that some bypass capacitor or more than one, on the DC input lines are defective, but haven't a clue where to look for these. I have managed to down-load and have printed off a service manual, but that is essentially useless for my purposes, since the schematic is almost too tiny to read. Of course, I can print off sections of it at much bigger size, but it is still difficult to read. 2) When power is turned off at the front-panel switch, everything reverts back to nothing, every previous settting and anything stored in memory is erased. From what I read in both the operating manual, and in the service manual, it seems that as long as the 13.8 VDC source is still connected, this shouldn't happen. There is a separate connection on the rear panel to a backup power source, and I suppose I should connect that, but doing that seems to me to be a band-aid fix and doesn't address the underlying problem. According to the service manual, there is a special circuit, IC-4, which is some sort of "backup power source". I am wondering if these two issues are related. Any help out there? These two original Kenwood installed capacitors are contained within a metal box which is mounted on the chassis, adjacent to the AC transformer. The fixings for this metal box appear to be two self tapping screws located on a tab between the AC transformer and the capacitor tag side of the metal box. I have removed the screws, but no matter how much I gently lever, I cannot extract the box from the TS930s chassis. It has been suggested to me, that perhaps leakage from the capacitors has found its way between the metal box and the chassis, which is acting as an adhesive, if this is the case, then perhaps I should apply more force. However, if anyone out there has had a similar experience and resolved the problem, I would appreciate some feed back. Sincerely, John. G3JVC / GM3JVC. Message-ID: <7E3E97C92A9541A585FA945ED43E3CC1@UserPC> Good morning, I am currently restoring a TS930s serial 5100012 and it would appear, the same serial number is printed on the Kenwood shipping box, that this TS930s began life in Germany having been supplied to a Kenwood dealer in Hannover and the address label being from the German arm of Kenwood. I have no idea of how many owners this rig may have had during its life, but I recently obtained it from a UK source. On removing the covers, I was surprised to find that additional circuitry had been added, which may be an FM facility, by Dewsbury Electronics G4CLX, Stourbridge UK. The addition consists of a small PCB hanging in the wiring beneath the TS930s chassis and another more complex PCB is fitted beneath the memory battery box, adjacent the loudspeaker, a Dewsbury Electronics G4CLX label is attached to the PCB chassis.. Based on my career experience, I would say that the addition was professionally installed, possibly by Dewsbury Electronics G4CLX. Unfortunately Dewsbury Electronics G4CLX is no longer trading I have tried searching via Google, asking my amateur radio friends, for information, but without success, other than to be told that this addition to the TS930s may have been something to do with the use of a 28 Mhz repeater facility. Personally I have never heard of this 28 Mhz repeater activity, nor seen any publicity material offering such an addition for the TS930s, but I work 100% CW so that is not surprising. I would like to ask the Kenwood community for their help, does anyone have any knowledge of this addition for the TS930s, operational instructions would be very useful, a copy of the paperwork supplied with the addition, by Dewsbury Electronics G4CLX would be perfect. The restoration of this TS930s is almost complete and I now have to decide whether to leave the Dewsbury addition installed, in which case the instructions are required, or return the TS930s to its original form. I would be grateful for any assistance, details, links etc. that the group might be able to offer. Sincerely, John. G3JVC / GM3JVC. .
