[Kenwood] TS-450s problem...

I have a friend who owns a Kenwood TS-450s Ser#30200738 which he 
recently bought from an SK's estate. He is having some intermittant issues 
which I am hoping someone here can at least identify.

Although I don't know ALL the details yet, he told me yesterday that the 
receiver goes completely dead periodically, the "S" meter dropping to zero. 
Keying the rig repeatedly will bring it back to activity at least for a while.

I told him it sounded like relays to me, but I could be wrong. 

The unit does have a built-in automatic antenna tuner.

Any help or suggestions? Anything "common" that sounds like this?
