This filter is a 500 Hz filter which can be used for both CW and for digital modes. It will work in the Kenwood TS-450, TS-690, TS-850, TS-870, TS-930, TS-940, TS-950, and probably others. This filter functions just like new, and looks the same. $80 Kenwood MC-60 A Deluxe Desk Microphone: The Kenwood MC-60A has been a popular desk mic among Kenwood owners for many years. It has a communication type dynamic unidirectional moving coil type mic element and features UP-DOWN tuning (on compatible Kenwood transceivers) plus a built-in pre-amp. There is a switch for PTT (push to talk) and also a lock feature. The mic impedance may be set for 50K ohms or 500 ohms. The frequency response is 150 Hz to 10 kHz (-6dB) with the Preamp off and 200 Hz to 7 kHz (-6 dB) with the Preamp on. The heavy zinc die-cast base provides extra stability. The mic terminates to a standard 8 pin mic plug. The preamp requires two AA cells which are mounted through the bottom of the base. Please note that the earlier MC-60 (non-"A") version featured a 4 pin mic plug and did not have UP-DOWN tuning. This one works 100% and looks very close to new. With paper work for $100. Need to thin the herd. Mint Kenwood TS-830S with matching VFO-240 external VFO. I bought these units new and have the original boxes, operating and service manuals, a collection of TS-830S notes and mods, some spare tubes, and plastic dust covers for both units. This radio has been modified (by me) for increased performance. I was never a fan of the (wide) 2.7 khz Kenwood stock SSB filters. I purchased a pair of INRAD 2.1 khz filters and did a custom install of them in the radio. The INRAD filters are larger in size from the stock Kenwood filters so this required a custom installation. I also built a custom PC board with relay switching to allow me to install a second I.F. 250 hz CW filter to complement the pair of Kenwood 500 hz filters. This allows you to select between 500/500hz or 500/250 hz filter pairs. The 500/250 hz filter pair is extremely useful on the low bands. This radio is in mint condition and all functions work perfectly. 100+ watts output on all nine bands. I really hate to let this radio go as it has always been a favorite of mine but with all of the vintage Drake radios here, plus my other Kenwood radios, I really need to clear things out a bit. The radio & VFO are set up and operating. You can come to my QTH and give it a test drive. I prefer not to ship this radio as I've seen some mint radios ruined in shipping. He gave up disappointed but asked me if I could look at his radio to see what was wrong. He had contacted Kenwood who said it was probably a driver. I've checked it out and indeed it seems to be the Q3 and Q4 2SC1972's that are bad but a few other things don't seem right too. The DC voltages are correct on Q2, the 2SC1971 but the RF levels are much higher than expected. Base is about right at 600 mv though spec'd at 450 mv, Collector is 8 volts p-p spec'd at only 2.5 volts p-p WHY? On the bases of Q3/Q4 I see 2 volts, spec'd at 1.4 volts p-p and Collector 150 mv spec'd as 6 volts p-p. Now the DC readings for Q3/Q4 are supposed to be 0 in receive and .74 vdc in transmit but I have 3.1 volts dc in both conditions. Collector voltage is correct at 13.8 vdc. I see a couple other questionable parts as well. D2, a thermistor seems to be shorted. Someone replace F1 with a "hay bailed" glass fuse with leads. Presumably that someone had replaced Q2 before and was none too neat about it so what else may be wrong is a mystery. I have not had much luck locating 2SC1972-26's yet at either PacParts or East Coast Transistor or the usual suppliers. Any thoughts other than eBay China? And listening to the sound coming out it is just as it should be except for two things. 1- Ok the off freq is still an issue. But it's OK because when I tune someone in to the tone I like like around 400Hz or when I CQ people come back to me at around 400 Hz too so thats OK, and actually preferable too than the 800 Hz default. BUT Now I'm umm getting some of the opposite sideband passing through. Like when I tune into a strong CW signal and start high tone and slide down lower and lower and lower to zero tone. and normally that would be the last you hear of the station. BUT No, if I continue tuning I hear the station again now going up in frrequency weaker yes, but audiable, and it finally goes away when it hits ohhh 200 Hz or so. I know this should not be. so what should I look for that will fix this? It has 40 memory channels, and up to 25 Watts of output power, which is continuously variable (no Hi or Low switch, but a front panel control to continuously vary power). Of course it will scan, and do the things one expects in a 2 meter rig. It has a GASFET in the front end for one of the best receivers I have ever used. I've replaced both devices, set the idle currents as shown in the service manual and then checked base voltages on both Q3 and Q4. The Service Manual shows .74 volts on each base but I'm only reading about .25 vdc with my DVM. Am I missing something or is this reading satisfactory? Before the devices were changed I was reading 3.0 vdc on each base which was clearly wrong. 73, Roger, NJ2R From kgordon2006 at frontier.com Fri Jul 25 13:28:22 2014 From: kgordon2006 at frontier.com (Kenneth G. The Service Manual > shows .74 volts on each base but I'm only reading about .25 vdc with my DVM. First of all, do you know what test instrument was used to provide the original values? Secondly, most DVMs do NOT provide accurate readings if there is RF present. Thirdly, have you simply tried the rig out to see if the output is now correct? If the rig now works whereas it did not before, then I would suspect that your instrument is the reason you are, apparently, getting a reading that appears to be too low. > Am I missing something or is this reading satisfactory? Well, one way you can check this that MIGHT work is to connect a 2.5 mH RF choke in series with the input test lead of your DVM, but make the connections as short as possible. The RF choke should block any RF, leaving the DC available, although due to the series resistance of the choke, it MAY be a bit lower than what is actually there. Building a real RF probe is easy, if you are interested in the RF levels at that point. There are loads of plans on the net for this. > I have no idea what Kenwood might have used to make the original measurement > though it is likely in the Service Manual so that is good to check. Great idea. Although the test instruments required are often listed in the beginning of the section on alignment in many service manuals, not all are done that way. Even so, it is a good idea to check. Again, good luck. It sounds as though you have fixed the original problem, anyway. The rest is pretty much an "academic exercise" to satisfy your curiousity. Most have the Prolific chipset. Be aware that there are Chinese clones of the Prolific chips. I bought one on Amazon, no driver disk with it. Had an older Prolific driver, found the USB device set a com port, but my radio software would not talk to it. Went to Prolific's website downloaded the latest driver and verification software, real Prolific chipset in it, latest driver did the trick, the radio is now talking to my pc. With the Prolific converters problems may arise when plugging them in another USB port. 73s Steef PA2A ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Duke, K5XU" To: Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 10:23 PM Subject: [Kenwood] USB to Cerial Conveter? > Is there a specific one to use when connection a TS570 to a computer that > has no com port? > > -- > Mike Duke, K5XU > > ______________________________________________________________ > Kenwood mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/kenwood > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Kenwood at mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html From rbethman at comcast.net Thu Jul 31 13:40:36 2014 From: rbethman at comcast.net (rbethman) Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2014 13:40:36 -0400 Subject: [Kenwood] USB to Cerial Conveter?
