[Kenwood] TH79A - No service

I have a TH79A (original, not the AD) and the display is not readable. I
opened it up and it is fed by one of the "film" ribbon cables. I reseated
it and it did make a difference but still not useable. We had some of these
cables at work and we cut a bit off of the end to create a new position for
the teeth in the connector to bite to fix them. This also did not seem to
work. This has been dead for years now and didn't really have much use at
all on it.
I just realized that it is one of the Kenwoods that will do Sky Command and
I thought I would play with that if I could get this thing to show me what I
was doing. The radio is 100% except for the display.
Questions: Is the display on the TH79A a known problem?
- Is there a voltage regulator problem causing low voltage to the
display?
- Is the cable the cause or is the display itself typically the
problem?
- Are there people who will replace the cable (Kenwood East and
West both refuse to look at it).
Thanks, 73, de Jin KG0KP
