To those who have considered ditching the ancient and heavy TS-930S power
supply in favor of something modern, I just fired up the rig that I posted a
question about in this forum, and it works perfectly. I can't believe it.
At one time my baby looked like a cadaver in some medical school lab.
I replaced the entire power supply with a Phoenix Contact Quint 24-29.5V
10-amp (15-amp boost) power supply that I bought NOS on eBay for $70 with
shipping. The model number is 2866763, but the one ending in 604 will work
just as well. These are regulated supplies with output protection. This
conversion is easiest with the "Pre-3,100,xxx" serial number rigs, but you can
adapt the later models to use this supply also. You can't imagine how much
this lightens this rig until you pick it up. I'm running mine at 26.5 VDC to
prevent another blow up. 265 Watts input is plenty.
I also had to replace the MRF-485 drivers, which I bought on eBay from a
seller in England. They are Eleflow brand. No oscillation problems at all.
Some people claim they are rated at 25-volts emitter-collector, but the
datasheet says 35-volts.The 19-volt Zener, D5, was also shorted.
I'll put together a project report in a few days, along with pictures.
W1AW/7 just said it sounds great. And it runs cool as ice because I have both
fans running at about 1/3 speed the moment the power supply comes on. I love
this radio, even though this model is really fragile.
73, John
