One thing I noticed last night while reviewing the maintenance manual: there 
is a very solid and special "cable" between the two ground connections 
shown in the manual. I am beginning to suspect that my ground connections 
aren't quite right.

I did look inside the VFO-820 last night. Everything looked very good in 
there, although there WAS a bit of corrosion around one of the places that 
one of the screws connects to to hold the covers on. I'll fix that too.
