There are exceptions, so I'd be wary of that.

I had the 820 and 830 in years well past so my memory is a tad foggy 
that far back. I directly keyed pretty much the entire line of Dentron 
amps with no problems. Its  been a long time but IIRC they all used 12V 
keying.

I also had several Collins amps, but do not recall using them with 
anything other than tube rigs.  IE: Either the S-line or KWM-2A

I directly keyed a Henry 2K4 and an Emtron DX-2sp from solid state and 
tube rigs. I keyed my Alpha 76 and welded the contacts on the relay in 
the SS rig.  It required a keying module.

OTOH I key the Emtron which can use either a Chinese FU728F, or a 
4CX1500B with both the old Icom 756 Pro and the newer  Yaesu FTDX5000MP. 
  I still use the Emtron and Alpha, although the Alpha needs some attention.
