How new is the Amplifier?  If from the '80s it most likely has 
120VDC/120VAC relay.

Depends on whom made the amplifier.

1) Some have a 12VDC relay inside.  That instance will not require such.

2) Many have 120VDC/120VAC relay.  This indeed requires external relay 
with 12VDC/12VAC supply to key the Amplifier, thereby protecting the 
TS-830S.  My TS-930S is in this category.

Having said this, I have screwed up and keyed the Amp direct with the 
mini din jack.  There has been no ill effects.  I'm not going to push my 
luck!  I'm bread-boarding up a Potter & Brumfield [sic} relay @ 12VDC 
with an old Rat-Shack transformer.  Will use a pair of NO contacts to 
key the amplifier.

Another method would be to build it IN the amplifier and reduce piles of 
extra junque on the bench.

So many options, so little.....
