Richard,  I'm with you.  Things that cure themselves will re-awaken the 
disease at some later time.

It may well be that a board edge connection is cruddy, or a connection 
that plugs to a board.  I once had the TS-900 that was a predecessor to 
the 520 series.

IIRC, the FETs/JFETs used in both of those, (and transistors), are in 
sockets.  So there is more chance for bad connections, especially after 
they sit on the shelf.
