[Kenwood] Magicom Board for TS-820 What?

Hello Les (and others).......
 
Shortly after the TS-820 came out, Magicom offered at least  TWO "kits" to 
upgrade the performance of these rigs.   One was to  improve TX speech 
processing; the other supposedly improved receiver performance  (I THINK it was 
in regard to sensitivity/overload performance, but not all that  sure).   
About 35 years ago, I bought one of each to install in my  then almost-new 
TS-820.   The TX circuitry was mostly on a small board  that was tacked in, and 
I THINK it had an IC that Magicom had removed the  markings from, and of 
course the docs didn't say what the part was.    This sounds like the mod you 
may have.   The RX mod was minimal in  parts count.........I think it 
consisted of a dual-gate mosfet or two to sub  into the receiver's front end.   
There may have been another part or  two changed also, but it's been a long 
time.   It's possible your '820  has this mod too, but U will have to check the 
2 transistors in the front end  and see if they have been changed.   As I 
recall, the transistors  supplied with this mod kit had the markings removed 
too.   If  your 820 has 2 unmarked devices in the front end, there's a good 
chance it had  the receive mod kit added too.    I remember, after making 
the mods,  there was minimal improvement in performance both ways (at least it 
seemed that  way), but I didn't have much sophisticated test gear back in 
those days, and  never made any "before/after" measurements.   Although my  
so-modified rig is probably long gone, I MAY still have a copy of the Magicom 
 paperwork, but it will be sometime next week before I'll get a chance to 
look  for it.   More later........have a busy few days ahead.

How does this thing work? How is it switched on or  off? What does the 
schematic look like? Does it change the method of adjusting  the processor? Is 
it a compressor or a clipper? What we've read sounds  favorable, but I'm 
bewildered.
