[Kenwood] Tough Kenwood rigs

For all around transceiver in a box, tube finals (load into bed springs
or wet string), and a superb receiver, my vote is for the TS-830S. Get a
TS-830M and also have the AM mode.
For separate receiver/transmitter and transceiver-type operation, the
R599A/D receiver, T599A/D transmitter also with tube finals, and a superb
receiver including either automatic selectivity (by virtue of the mode
switch) or by manual selection. Manual selection is from .5 KHz to 20
KHz. Receiver has AM, FM, LSB, USB, and CW listening modes. 20 KHz is
great for listening to those wide-body AM transmissions.

I have both combos, and lots of receivers, transmitters, and transceivers
have passed through my shack, but the models listed above have been
keepers and still get very active use.
