Variacs are great, but if you drop the incoming AC, the B+ will also be reduced: I sometimes use power resistors on the filament output side in cases like this, keeping B+ where it should be for transmitting.

I'm told we should have 4.9v fil voltage on the 3-500s.
We have 5.3v
Is using a 220v variac a fairly simple solution to getting the fil voltage down to 4.9 ?
I guess I could also put a resistance on one side of the ac primary of the fil transformer. That could drop it down slightly.
Are there any commercially available solutions?
