Boy! Am I pissed! :-(

The TS-820S I had bought as a backup rig, and which would not, apparently, 
work in CW has been "repaired" and is in operation.

The problem was quite simple: some jackass had reversed the two key jacks 
on the back panel, and there was no external indication that this had been 
done. I did not figure this out until I had finally traced the circuit backwards 
from the FIX/VOX board inside the set.

There are two standard 1/4" key jacks on the back panel: one is for CW and 
the other is for the built-in RTTY FSK keying, and their correct postions are 
so marked by heavy stampings on the back panel.

So I had been plugging my key into the RTTY jack instead of the correct CW 
key jack. Of COURSE it wouldn't "work" in CW!

It is possible that someone had moved them to install the DC-DC module on 
the back panel, and simply got them reversed when they reinstalled them, 
and then never used the rig on CW afterwards.

In any case, I am thoroughly disgusted for many reasons, not the least of 
which is that I was forced to miss many of my skeds, and spent several 
unnecessary days working this simple problem to a conclusion.

However, I DID learn far more about this nice little rig than I really needed to 
or wanted to at this point, AND I did activate the CW filter that although it had 
been installed, had never been used because a jumper had never been 
installed in the correct position.

The rig DOES need a complete and thorough alignment, but for now it is 
completely usable. I used it on CW and SSB to make contacts, and for some 
reason, which I have yet to figure out, it drives my SB-200 much more easily 
than my TS-940 ever did.

I'll probably figure THAT out when I repair the '940.

Sheesh..... :-(

Later today, I'll connect it up for my digital (PACTOR) work.
