Thanks for pointing that out Cliff
Of course its better to use LTC chip.
Mine ICL7660 works just fine with litlle trick (for experiment)
Supply voltage must be at least 12 V to achieve -6V at the output
so i just reduce the V+ current a litlle bit trying no to exceed
power dissipation of the plastic dip housing of this chip. Without
reducing current it will work also and you have still some margin.
If it blows up i will let you (group) know. Time since this mod
in my case is 1 year (pretty nothing for semicoductor hi) without any
problem.
So kids you can try it at home but beware!

p.s. I think that guys from Yamada (?) use pins that comes from
some of the old broken IC`s
