A quick check of the msg. header reveals that the message appears to
have originated in Latvia 

I need that country! 


The bad guys get your address book spoof the from line and spam everyone
in your address book to make it look like a real msg. But you can look
at the message header and follow the path back to it's origination. The
bad code (virus) usually comes in from a web site that is running server
software that is not fully patched and or has weak security.
Your best defense is to keep your system patches up to date, don't run
in administrator mode, and practice safe computing,
