[Kenwood] TS950SDX balanced mixer adjustment

The service manual for the TS950SDX says that the balanced mixer of the main receiver should be adjusted to minimum noise level by turning VR2 in the RF unit. The service manual for the TS850 is a bit more specific: Adjust noise level to minimum level.  Specifications 1kHz +/- 100 Hz. Although noise will produced when VR1 is turning, this is not malfunction. 

Does minimum noise level mean minium noise in the loud speaker or minium reading on the AF V.M ? Our experience is that sensitivity drops considerably if that procedure is followed.
