Yes, it seems a bit better now than it was. Perhaps its taking time to get used

Good idea. I don't have a headphone here at the minute. (I gave up ham radio 
about 20 years ago, sold all my equipment, then got interested again. Hence I 
lack some basic items like headphones).

I've tried another speaker - the second one from a Yaesu FT-ONE which works OK. 
The change of speaker did not significantly change the audio volume from the 
TS-940S, so it's not a fault on the speaker.
